How to make friends at university

Everybody finds pushing themselves out of their comfort zone uncomfortable, but when you move to university, it’s a given. Being a fresher is full of new and exciting experiences – one of which is making new friends. If you’re worried about fitting in or finding your tribe this September, here are 14 things that could help you find your future girl (and guy) gang.

1. JOIN A CLUB
Doesn’t matter what club it is, so long as it’s something you enjoy. Whether it’s hockey, darts, even a drinking society – joining clubs and societies at the start of university means you’ll have tonnes of chances to meet other like-minded people.

2. STALK EVERYONE ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Don’t pretend you weren’t going to do this one anyway. Scope out your university’s Facebook page to find out who’s on your course and staying in your halls, and then have a good deep dive into their Instagram/Twitter feeds to see who’s on your wavelength. SURE, it’s a bit creepy, but it works like a charm – and they’ll be doing it to you anyway.

3. DON’T JUDGE PEOPLE
You might have an idea of who looks like your ‘type’ of friend, but don’t let that limit who else you make conversation with. Friendship material can come in many guises – and you really don’t want to write someone off in the first week only to discover you really like them later.

4. DON’T BE A DICK
Kind of self-explanatory, really. Negativity, bitching and stealing housemates’ food all fall under the umbrella of douchebaggery, and that’s not the impression anyone wants to be giving off. Be courteous to your new housemates and other people at your uni, and treat them how you want to be treated.

5. INVEST IN A DOOR STOP
Keeping your halls door open is a surefire way to look open and sociable to those you live with, and people are more likely to stop by and say hey.

6. COOK FOR PEOPLE
Having a communal meal is a great way to get everyone out of their bedrooms and having fun together. Cook something simple like one of these 20 easy recipes so you’re not too flustered to have a laugh.

7. BE LOVELY
Being nice is like, rule one in the friend-making handbook. If someone needs help, whether it’s a spare pen or a revision buddy, offer it. If a housemate is feeling homesick, cheer them up with a cheesy movie or brownies. It’s nice to be nice, and it might bag you a few mates in the process.

8. STICK THE KETTLE ON
There’s no more British way to make people love you than the selfless act of making a lovely cuppa.

9. PAY SOME COMPLIMENTS
Complimenting people is a great way to start a conversation with absolutely anyone. For example, if you love someone’s shoes, tell them and ask them where they got them from. It’ll make the recipient really happy, and might kickstart a beautiful shoe-loving bond.

10. DON’T PUT ALL YOUR EGGS IN ONE FRIENDSHIP BASKET
You may have found an amazing friendship group, but make sure you’ve got other friends, too – such as society mates, or course mates. If something goes wrong in your group, it’s great to have other friends to fall back on. Also, don’t jump into a friendship too early on – the last thing you want is to be BFFs with someone in the first week, only for them not to be your kind of person later down the line.

11. HANG OUT IN THE COMMUNAL AREA
Whether it’s the kitchen or lounge, spend time in the common rooms in your accommodation. Staying holed up in your bedroom is not helpful when it comes to making BFFs aplenty.

12. MAKE YOUR ROOM AWESOME
Make your living space great so it feels like a nice place that other people want to come and hang out. Get inspired by these FAB bedroom decor ideas.

13. NEVER FORGET – EVERYONE ELSE WANTS TO MAKE FRIENDS JUST AS MUCH AS YOU
It can be hard to remember this when you’re in the moment, but EVERYONE is shitting themselves at the start of university, and would welcome someone to strike up a conversation with them. So go for it
